On Tuesday morning, Dr. Ben Carson appeared on ABC’s The View. After an animated debate about healthcare, something interesting happened.
During his interview he was asked by Terry Crews (You may know him from the Old Spice Commercials or the movie White Chicks) if he thought welfare was racist. This is how Carson responded:
“When you rob someone of their incentive to go out there and improve themselves, you are not doing them any favors. When you take someone and pat someone on their head and say there there, you poor little thing… I am going to give you food stamps… let me give you housing subsidy… let me give you free health care… and because you cannot do that and those people over there that are causing half of your problems.”
At which point he was interrupted by co-host Whoopi Goldberg, but eventually was able to finish his point saying:
“So what would be much more empowering, would be to use our intellect and our resources to give those people a way up and out.”
To which Crews clapped and replied:
“I agree.”
When Dr. Carson finally powers through interruptions to finish his point, an amazing thing happened: The View crowd burst into applause.
Dr. Ben Carson proves a great thing about common sense: if someone is actually able to speak it without being silenced by a know-it-all and people are actually able to consider what is being said, then it has a lot of power of persuasion. Maybe that’s why most television networks don’t allow it.
