4 Ways To Prevent Razor Burn

One of the best parts about shorts and skirt season is, of course, shorts and skirts. But one of our least favorite things about summertime? The constant need to shave our legs. Shaving itself would be a breeze if not for razor burn, a dreaded consequence that many of us have experienced after speedily running a razor along our dry legs.
“Razor burn is the colloquial term for the irritation and ingrown hairs that can follow shaving,” says Dr. David E. Bank, founder and director of The Center For Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery. “Razor burn can occur when using an overly dull razor, from using soap instead of shaving cream or being overly aggressive.”
The good news is that there are four simple toprevent razor burn so that your legs looks smooth all summer long.
1. Only shave wet skin. “One of the simplest ways to avoid the dreaded razor burn is treating and conditioning the skin before you shave,” says Regina Rodriguez, senior brand manager for GiGI “Always start with clean skin and make sure both the hair and the skin are wet.
2. Always use shaving gel. You also want to apply a shaving gel before you shave; Rodriguez recommends GIGI Bumper.  The clear gel formula makes it easy to see exactly where unwanted hairs are. Aloe and chamomile soothe sensitive skin while salicylic acid prevents razor burn and ingrown hairs from forming.
3. Shave in the right direction. Resist the urge to shave in the opposite direction of hair growth, Rodriguez warns; instead shave in the same direction the grows.
4. Store your razor properly. Last but not least, keep your razor in a clean, dry place and toss the blade after about 5-7 uses.
