The Exquisite Work of Rebecca Allen
Makeup
artists are interesting if you take the time to watch them while they are
working. Their faces give themselves away – not because their expressions are
saying that they would rather be somewhere else or would prefer to be doing
something else, but just the opposite. Their faces are the picture of total
concentration. They are almost expressionless in their focus and that is
because (it appears to us anyway) that they are completely focused on the face
they are putting makeup on.
Rebecca
Allen is a makeup artist who works out of Brisbane, Australia, and travels the
world to work on movies. She is an exemplary artist and in almost every
photograph we have seen of her, captured while she works, she shows the same targeted
concentration in each shot. It’s as though she shuts out the world around her,
sizes up her canvas (the actor or model’s face) and sets about re-making the
person’s image into the one that’s is in her mind’s eye. And each time the
actor or model comes out more beautiful or more like the character they are
portraying than they ever imagined they could be.
If
you watch closely you will see that Rebecca is the epitome of someone who is at
the top of her game. She has been doing makeup, hair styling and special
effects makeup for over ten years and has established herself in the eyes of
producers, actors and directors as a professional who can be counted on to get
the job done creatively and within budget. Both of those concepts are important
in the film and TV industry because it is a creative business, no doubt, but it
is also extremely cost-conscious. If an artist can fulfill both of those things
on a movie set then she is considered an asset to the production company.
Rebecca
is an asset no matter what movie or TV show she is working on. She recently did
prosthetic makeup for the film Aquaman and before that she worked on Thor,
Pirates of the Caribbean 5, The Inbetweeners, Alien Covenant, Guardians of the
Tomb, Legend of the Sun and Moon, and she is about to start work on the
upcoming live-action film Dora The Explorer. Rebecca is a citizen of the world
and she does a lot of traveling to work on films. It must be nice to do what
you love to do and be able to make people more beautiful, one person at a time.
